Stances

Parallel Stance

Narani Sogi

A natural standing position with feet shoulder width apart and parallel, pointing forward. It is used as a neutral or transitional position and frequently appears during pattern ready positions.

Walking Stance

Gunnun Sogi

Image placeholder

A long, forward weighted stance with the front knee bent over the toes and the rear leg straight. It is one of the most fundamental and commonly used stances in ITF patterns and step sparring.

L-Stance (Back Stance)

Niunja Sogi

Image placeholder

A rear weighted stance where approximately 70 percent of body weight is placed on the back leg, with feet forming an L shape. It is widely used in ITF Taekwon-Do for defensive techniques and counter attacks.

Sitting Stance

Annun Sogi

Image placeholder

A wide, horse riding stance with feet twice shoulder width apart, both toes pointing forward, and knees bent outward. This stance provides a very stable base for powerful hand techniques.

Bending Stance

Guburyo Sogi

Image placeholder

A one legged stance where the supporting knee is deeply bent and the raised knee is lifted and bent. It is primarily used when preparing for jumping or flying kicks.

Rear Foot Stance

Dwitbal Sogi

Image placeholder

A stance where virtually all body weight rests on the rear leg, with the front foot lightly touching the floor for balance. It allows rapid kick deployment from the front leg with minimal weight shift.

Closed Stance

Moa Sogi

Image placeholder

A stance where both feet are placed together with heels touching. It appears in various ready positions and demonstrates discipline and attention.

X-Stance (Cross Stance)

Kyocha Sogi

Image placeholder

A crossed leg stance in which one foot steps behind or in front of the other with both knees slightly bent. It is used as a transitional stance before certain kicks or jumping techniques.

Low Stance

Nachuo Sogi

Image placeholder

A very deep, low version of either the walking or sitting stance, lowering the body's center of gravity significantly. It is used for low section attacks or special defensive scenarios.

Diagonal Stance

Sasun Sogi

Image placeholder

A stance positioned at a 45 degree angle relative to the opponent, offering a reduced target profile. It combines elements of readiness and lateral mobility.

Attention Stance

Charyot Sogi

Image placeholder

A formal upright stance with heels together and feet at a 45 degree angle, arms at the sides. It is adopted when called to attention by the instructor and at the start and end of class.

Ready Stance

Junbi Sogi

Image placeholder

A preparatory stance indicating readiness to begin training or a pattern. There are several variants (A through D and special forms like Chonson) that appear at the start of different tuls.
