Kicks

Front Kick

Ap Chagi

Image placeholder

A straight kick delivered with the ball of the foot (apkumchi) to the front. The knee chamber is brought up first before the leg snaps forward, then retracts.

Side Kick

Yop Chagi

Image placeholder

A powerful linear kick delivered sideways using the footsword (balkal) or heel. The body turns perpendicular to the target while the leg extends directly sideways.

Turning Kick

Dollyo Chagi

Image placeholder

A circular kick that strikes with the instep or ball of the foot to the front by pivoting on the supporting foot and swinging the kicking leg in an arc. It is widely used in sparring due to its speed and range.

Reverse Turning Kick

Bandae Dollyo Chagi

Image placeholder

A spinning roundhouse kick that begins with a 180 degree turn before the kicking leg is swung in a circular arc. The rotation generates additional power.

Twisting Kick

Bituro Chagi

Image placeholder

A kick in which the foot is twisted so that the instep or ball strikes inward across the target in a screwing motion. It can penetrate guard gaps that straight or circular kicks cannot.

Downward Kick (Axe Kick)

Naeryo Chagi

Image placeholder

The leg is raised high and then brought down sharply onto the target with the heel or footsword. The dropping weight of the leg produces considerable impact.

Flying Kick

Twimyo Chagi

Image placeholder

Any kick performed while airborne after jumping, such as a flying side kick or flying front kick. The jump adds momentum and reach.

Crescent Kick

Bandal Chagi

Image placeholder

A kick in which the leg sweeps in a crescent arc, either inward or outward. It can deflect an opponent's limb or strike the head using the sole or footsword.

Back Kick

Dwit Chagi

Image placeholder

A kick delivered directly backward using the heel, typically after turning away from the opponent. It is one of the strongest kicks when executed with full body weight.

Hook Kick

Goro Chagi

Image placeholder

A kick that first extends outward past the target and then hooks back with the heel to strike. The hooking motion can catch opponents who lean away.

Vertical Kick

Sewo Chagi

Image placeholder

A kick delivered in a straight, upward vertical path using the footsword or heel, targeting the chin or underside of the jaw.

Target Kick

Pyojok Chagi

Image placeholder

A combination kick in which one kick is used to distract or move a guard while a second kick delivers the actual strike.
